The Exhibition “The Light of Yasnaya Polyana” Introduced Slovak Students of Matej Bel University to the History of Leo Tolstoy's Estate Museum

On March 15, 2024, a banner exhibition "The Light of Yasnaya Polyana," dedicated to the history of the estate museum of L. N. Tolstoy, "Yasnaya Polyana," concluded at the Department of Slavic Languages of the Faculty of Arts at Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica.

From March 4th to 15th, 2024, the exhibition was visited by university students and educators. 


We have Maslenitsa, and you?

Maslenitsa is one of the most famous and festive Slavic holidays, originating from pagan culture. This year, Maslenitsa celebrations will begin on Monday 11 March and end on Sunday 17 March. During this time, bright and noisy celebrations are held all across Russia: people ride sleds and horses, organize mass celebrations, bake the iconic pancakes with various tasty fillings, and have tea parties in a heart-warming family atmosphere. 

8 March: The International Woman´s Day

 On the 8th of March, we celebrate International Women's Day. Even though this date is not a Slovak public holiday, we can see more men buying flowers for women than usual.


In the Tracks of Composer Bedřich Smetana. 200 years since his birth

On 2 March 2024, the music world celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Bedřich Smetana, an outstanding Czech composer, father of Czech classical music and creator of the national opera and symphony. 


A meeting of students of the Faculty of Philosophy took place in Bratislava with representatives of the European Foundation of Slavic Literature and Culture

On February 29, 2024, a meeting was held at the European Foundation of Slavic Literature and Culture for students studying Russian at the Department of Slavic Languages, Faculty of Philosophy, University. Mateja Bela (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia) with representatives of the Foundation.

On 21st of February we celebrate an International Mother Tongue Day

Every year on 21st of February, Mother Tongue Day is celebrated around the world. This holiday was established by UNESCO in 1999.

The date serves as a remembrance of the events that took place on the 21st of February 1952 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where police shot dead students demonstrating for the recognition of Bengali as an official language.
