Declassified documents on the liberation of Bratislava

The Russian Ministry of Defense has declassified documents on the liberation of Czechoslovakian Bratislava. Multimedia section “Fraternal Glory and Courage “To the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Bratislava from Nazi occupation" is presented on the website of the department.

The Ministry posted previously unknown archival documents from the Central Archive funds, including combat reports from the fronts, ciphers, political reports, award sheets and photographs.

The first section is devoted to the Slovak national uprising, which broke out on August 29, 1944. The Soviet command provided help to the Slovak patriots who raised the uprising. The presented political report states the military-political situation in the territory occupied by the rebels, as well as the fighting qualities of the rebel army and local residents.  The document states that: “All segments of the Slovak population treated with great love and admiration the Red Army, the fraternal Russian people and thanked for their help in organizing the Czechoslovak corps in the USSR”.

 On April 4, 1945, the Red Army liberated Bratislava. According to the presented award sheets, the Soviet military showed courage and heroism. Documents attesting to the acts of atrocity of the Nazi invaders in the Czechoslovak Republic, Zvolensky okrug and the city of Banska Bistrica were also made public. “Thousands of people were thrown into the Gestapo dungeons by secret police and SS, including Slovaks, Jews, Gypsies, French, Russians and Americans.
