August 1 Uncovering the relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov

The Monk Seraphim of Sarov, in the world - Prokhor Moshnin, the great ascetic of the Church, was born in the year 1754. Even in his youth, he made the decision to devote his life entirely to God. He labored in the Sarov desert. Once Prokhor fell seriously ill. He had a vision: the Mother of God, the holy apostles Peter and John the Theologian appeared to him.

The Mother of God, pointing her hand at the sick man, said to John: "This is from our kind." She then healed the novice. Prokhor took the tonsure with the name Seraphim. He became famous for the special gift of deep inner prayer. There are many examples of his meekness, love for all living things, and the great joy that the elder bestowed on everyone. For almost eight years he received those who came to him, instructed, consoled, healed. The Monk Seraphim of Sarov died in 1833. Seventy years later, on August 1, 1903, the solemn uncovering of the relics of the saint and his glorification took place. The entire imperial family took part in the celebrations, thousands of pilgrims arrived in Sarov and Diveevo. But the prediction of the Monk Seraphim about the coming years of persecution of the Christian faith sounded like a terrible omen for the whole country.
