A student seminar “The Creative Heritage of Count Leo Tolstoy” took place in Slovakia

The student seminar “The Creative Heritage of Count Leo Tolstoy”, dedicated to the genius of Lev Nikolaevich and his influence on the work of Slovak public figures, took place on December 14, 2023 at the European Foundation of Slavic Literature and Culture.

The event, which took place within the framework of the educational project “Light of Yasnaya Polyana,” was attended by teachers and students of the gymnasium named after. A. Vrabla from the city of Levice, students of Russian language courses. Among the Slovak participants there were students from Ukraine.

The participants got acquainted and then discussed interesting facts from the biography of Count Leo Tolstoy,  noted the influence of his work on the problems of the Slavs, on his connections with Slovak public figures. For example, the writer was often visited in Russia and was in long-term friendly correspondence with the first president of the Czechoslovak Republic, Tomas Garrick Masaryk, and a follower of Tolstoy’s ethical teachings, his family’s personal physician, translator and publisher of his works into the Slovak language was the Slovak native of Ruzomberok, Dusan Makovitsky . Perhaps for this reason, the unique documentary footage was emotionally received, where Leo Tolstoy was captured on a horseback ride with his friend Dusan Makovitsky.

During the event, students willingly participated in an educational quiz on the topic of the seminar. The winners received books published by EFSPaK and sweet Christmas gifts.

The seminar ended with a review of the banner exhibition “The Light of Yasnaya Polyana”, where the children heard the story of how the Yasnaya Polyana estate became a “literary mecca” during Leo Tolstoy’s lifetime. The exhibition was prepared and provided by the State Museum-Estate of L.N. Tolstoy "Yasnaya Polyana".
